Glasgow Tigers 47 Somerset Rebels 43

George wears the colours on his sleeve (ok it's his wrist, you know what I mean.....)
Tigers come round after the match, with Shane Parker along for the ride.

Travis exits the frame, with Josh holding off Lubos Tomicek.

Same race as above, with Josh out on his own.

Anders holds off Mark Baseby & Kyle Howarth. Only three points, but paid for five. Anders was good entertainment, but didn't get the return he deserved, mainly because he was getting squeezed out badly in the opening bends.

Josh looking stylish through the 3rd bend. Should have scored about nine, but got thumped with an exclusion in his 1st heat for being the cause of a 2nd 'unsatisfactory start'.

I have real problems telling some of the Somerset team apart, due to their matching Kevlars & bike covers. Going by the riding style and the lower segment of his helmet, I think this may be none other than Ashfield legend Shane Parker.

Big Lee

Jamie Courtney got man of the meeting for his eight points from six rides. A heat win, two 2nd places and a 3rd, with two unprogrammed rides contributing half his haul. Definitely improving a bit.

An absolutely heaving Ashfield awaits the start of heat 5. Yes, they were freebies, and yes many won't be back, but of the 1800 or so in the ground, if a hundred come back, even on a semi-regular basis, the exercise will have been worthwhile.

Shane Parker

It had to happen. Eventually, we all knew in deep down, that one day we'd see the great man walk off into the sunset into either retiral or another team. It would seem that there's still racing mileage in the old lad yet, but sadly not with the Tigers. It's not clear as yet who his new club will be, but we all look forward to seeing him visit next season, and hopefully not do too much damage to the Tigers.

It's been a pleasure watching Shane, even if the last two seasons haven't been all they could have for him, due to injury and illness. Some of his rides have been breathtaking. Too many to mention, but the showdown with Ryan Fisher during the Spring Trophy meeting this season past and the one man show against a rampant Monarchs the season before will live long, even if the score of that match has long since been expunged from the memory.

Cheers Shane!

Glasgow Tigers 52 Redcar Bears 38

First bumps of the year for Shane.

In these hard times, it always pays to save a little tyre tread.

Where did they all go?

Victory Parade lap
The team accept a little gift.

A slow start to the meeting, but ultimately the Tigers ran out reasonably comfortable winners over a Redcar side that suffered from Gary Havelock not being his usual self around Ashfield. Shane, James and Anders were all on top form for the Tigers, while Redcar scored reasonably through the team without anyone breaking into double figures.

Glasgow Tigers 56 Edinburgh Monarchs 37 (Glasgow win 95-92 on Aggregate)

The Flyer heads back to the pits to apologise to that nice Mr Parker..................... =D **

That's entertainment folks!

After a year of hammerings and 'defeat from the jaws of victory' episodes against the Monarchs, the Tigers finally got the monkey off their backs, taking not only the meeting victory (which would have been enough to be honest), but also managing to overcome the huge 16 point defecit from Friday night at the West Lothian Arena.

This meeting had it all. Contentious decisons, passing galore and absurd theatrics, courtesy of Shane Parker and Ryan Fisher.

Weather - Overcast and cold. Nice cloud formations though.....

Track - Looked like there was a bit more dirt on it this week.

Crowd - Usual Tigers v Monarchs turnout.

Racing - Glasgow took the meeting by the scruff from the off and never really looked back Some excellent passes and generally close racing, in spite of the final score.

Man of the Meeting - James Grieves. That said, Shane, Anders, Fisher and Wethers all played their part in what was a cracker of a meeting.

Rider Ratings:

Shane - A great opening heat win on Anders Andersen's bike. Beaten by Matty Wethers later on. The move in Heat 13 was hard, but I think Fisher fell off in fright more than anything else as Shane got it broadside very early. Great theatrics afterwards. Fisher gets up, Parker comes round after the lights go on, Fisher gesticulates angrily at Parker, Shane flips the finger...... Oh, how we all chuckled...........

James - An excellent days racing from Grieves. Only beaten once all afternoon (by Fishcakes) We'll need this guys points this year.

Josh - Got tangled up with Andrew Tully in heat 3. A bit of a 50/50 decision and could have gone either way. Josh ened up in the dirt and got the decision. Heat win in 14 proved to be crucial.

Mitchell - Heat 2 win, and a battling, if fruitless ride in heat 7 against Fisher & Tully.

Anders - Made the most of his reserve berth and looked very fast and aggressive. Plenty passing from the Dane and he looks to be a future Ashfield favourite.

Ross - Had his gating boots on, taking a third, a 2nd and two paid wins. Vital points in the end.

Peter - A slow start, but a crucial 5-1 with Anders in heat 12.

Monarchs:

Wethers and Fisher were the pick of the Monarchs, with Fisher only really getting it wrong at the tail end of the meeting. Summers chipped in with seven and Tully was better than his three points suggest. Rajkowski is a good rider, but he wasn't really on it on Sunday. Stoddart had an awful day and was well out of things. The Monarchs really do need Jonasson, in both body and spirit, if they're to think about successfully defending their title.

Video clips will be up soon.

** All in jest! In case some passing fool thinks otherwise.

Ashfield Classic - Grieves In The End

On Sunday, James Grieves became the first Scottish rider to win the Ashfield Classic meeting. He slotted in nicely behind Elite League rider Rory Schlein to take one of the first two 'Grand Final' places, his reward for three wins and two second places during the meeting. Schlein however, looked to be on another planet, going through the qualifying card undefeated.

The semi final took place between Carl Stonehewer, James Wright, Shane Parker and Tomas Topinka. Parker made his way through to 2nd place early in the race and held position behind Stoney. It looked very much like Stoney was enjoying himself again at one of his favourite hunting grounds, taking the flag and along with Parker, the last remaining places in the final heat.

It had been a pretty decent meeting, all told. Maybe not on a par with the thrills dished up to us by Filip Sitera last year, but Stoney pulled off an astounding move thrugh the 1st & 2nd bends in one heat, and Shane seemed to be in a fairly racey mood throughout. New Tigers signing Peter Juul got some competitive track time, and didn't look too bad at all, taking a win and two thirds. Lee Dicken claimed a few scalps, beating EL rider David Howe to take a heat win, as well as holding off Tomas Topinka for a third place. The rest of the Tigers representatives faired reasonably well. Mitchell looked good in his first heat with a 2nd place, but poor gating saw him out of sorts for the rest of the meeting. Robert and Trent did ok, with 8 and 7 respectively.

The final was something of a disappointment as far as the racing was concerned, though I was overjoyed with the result, as were a fair few others. Three Ashfield specialists going head on with an EL hotshot should have made for a eal elbow banger, but it was probably one of the more pedestian heats of the day. Grieves gated, Schlein got stuck behind Stoney for a few laps before passing and Shane trundled in at the rear. James was too far in front to be troubled though, and he was able to enjoy his last few laps in peace as the flag (and the sun) went down on another Classic.

Congratulations to James, a rider I've come to enjoy immensely when he rides at Ashfield, whether as a guest or for his current club Redcar. A brilliant gate in the final and a composed ride to the flag seeing him take the £1000 1st prize and the Norrie Isbister trophy.

Ashfield Classic Final

Grieves, Schlein, Stonehewer & Parker get ready for the final
Stoney (3rd) & Schlein (2nd) check the vintage of their bubbly.
Classic winner James Grieves covers someone in expensive alcohol (Schlein I think...)

I'll have the rest of Sunday's vid clips and a few more photos up tomorrow.

No scorecard as yet, so I'll leave any in-depth analysis until I have something to corroborate my foggy recollections of the meeting.

Glasgow Tigers v Edinburgh Monarchs Heat 6

Shane Parker goes on a tactical ride from 15m. Robert Ksiezak fails to keep Matthew Wethers in 2nd place, leaving Shane too much to do when he finally found his way through. Good riding from Andrew Tully to keep Shane at the back for over two laps.

Am I alone in preferring the Blogger video player? Embedded Youtube stuff is really ugly. It also takes an age to buffer and the blurring on the full size screen can make the clips unwatchable sometimes. On the other hand, Youtube is a good way to get clips out to the world at large.

What I was thinking was that I should reverse the way I'm doing things. This weekends clips will go up exclusively on Tigers At The Tapes, using the Blogger clip player, then I'll post up the best or most interesting clip on Youtube later in the week.

Any thoughts on the matter are welcome, though I'm really just 'thinking aloud' here.

Cheers!

Tigers v Monarchs Youtube Clips

From the weekend. Couple of hi-lights

Aaron Summers shows how it's done with an astonishing double pass at the start of the last lap in Heat 14

Shane Parker takes one of four heat wins. This one was Heat 9.

Glasgow Tigers v Edinburgh Monarchs

Heat 10 - Lawson, Jonasson, Ksiezak, Grajczonek
Mitchell Davey. Trying hard but off the pace. Probably another week or so away from full fitness.
Andrew Wethers, followed by Grajczonek and Brady in heat 13
Heat 15 - Shane in full flow and out in front. William Lawson gives chase.
As fine a performance as I've seen from Shane, but unfortunately it was on the end of a grim team performance that would probably have seen the Tigers hard pressed by a good Conference side.
