Theo chases the pack. Flight from Finland delayed by 4 hours? Touchdown in Edinburgh at five past 4? Many would have headed straight to the bar. Theo made it back for heat 8 and scored a paid win in his 2nd outing. A warm welcome awaited as he came to the tapes, though a fine for missing his first heat will have been a bummer for our resident long track specialist.

Tigers On The Telly And Other Stories

Never sneak up on a veteran

Ok troops, a few mentions and notices I promised to make. First up, I have been asked by Brian (of Bongo, George & Nick fame) to mention that the Sky meeting against Somerset will be on the telly at Rab Ha's in the Merchant City. If you haven't got the Dirty Digger's magic lantern show installed in the hoose, then this is the place to go. There should be a wee handfull of us there to shout on the Tigers, so do come along if yr in the area. On top of that, it looks like Rab Ha's serves some proper beer (none of that nitro keg pish!) Result!

Next up, I was contacted by BlackCountryBiker, who runs the excellent MotoFreako blog. A cracking read that covers just about every variant of oval dirt track racing there is, and a few other things as well. Think of it as a companion to the awesome Keep Turning Left.

Glasgow Tigers 47 Somerset Rebels 43

George wears the colours on his sleeve (ok it's his wrist, you know what I mean.....)
Tigers come round after the match, with Shane Parker along for the ride.

Travis exits the frame, with Josh holding off Lubos Tomicek.

Same race as above, with Josh out on his own.

Anders holds off Mark Baseby & Kyle Howarth. Only three points, but paid for five. Anders was good entertainment, but didn't get the return he deserved, mainly because he was getting squeezed out badly in the opening bends.

Josh looking stylish through the 3rd bend. Should have scored about nine, but got thumped with an exclusion in his 1st heat for being the cause of a 2nd 'unsatisfactory start'.

I have real problems telling some of the Somerset team apart, due to their matching Kevlars & bike covers. Going by the riding style and the lower segment of his helmet, I think this may be none other than Ashfield legend Shane Parker.

Big Lee

Jamie Courtney got man of the meeting for his eight points from six rides. A heat win, two 2nd places and a 3rd, with two unprogrammed rides contributing half his haul. Definitely improving a bit.

An absolutely heaving Ashfield awaits the start of heat 5. Yes, they were freebies, and yes many won't be back, but of the 1800 or so in the ground, if a hundred come back, even on a semi-regular basis, the exercise will have been worthwhile.

Glasgow Tigers v Somerset Rebels Clip2

Josh sweeps round the outside and away to another heat win. James holds second, but falls backtowards the end of the race, allowing Cory Gathercole to make a last ditch banzai move on him. James sees the danger and shuts off, conceding the position.

Scunny clips tomorrow or Friday, with the junior heats going up over the weekend.

Glasgow Tigers v Somerset Rebels

A 2nd set from the Somerset meeting. Currently fighting with a virus ridden laptop and the sheer living hell that is Windows Vista, so it'll take most of the week to get the backlog of photos and clips up. Look out also for some clips of the 2nd halfs from the past two meetings, in particular the 1st round of Colin Mackie's Junior 'snowball'. Cheers!

Glasgow Tigers 45 Somerset Rebels 44

Rebels win 90-89 on agg

And so, a meeting that never really looked in doubt, was snatched away by a tenacious, persistent Somerset side. As well as we rode at their place, they rode better when it mattered in Glasgow. The track looked over-watered and caught a fair few out. It's only a guess on my part, but it's possible that that this was in anticipation of a bright, warm, sunny day. It looked that way early on, but by lunchtime, it had started to cloud over and the moisture in the track was never going to evapourate.

It was a strange old meeting though. Held in front of the poorest crowd I've seen at Ashfield in a long time, on a grim, overcast day, it had a bit of an anti-climactic feel to it. Nonetheless, there was some pretty good racing. Lee Smart provided most of it for Glasgow, with two wins and some cracking over-taking maneuvers. We'll miss him if he gets recalled by Birmingham. Mitchell looked to have heat 2 wrapped up when he caught too much grip on the 2nd bend and lifted. he put it down fairly safely and remounted, but by that time a 5-1 had become a 3-3. Not a bad day, but he'll be looking to pick up more points in coming weeks. Jossh had another quiet weekend, but we all know what he can do and he should be back amongst the points in time. Shane had a slow start in heat 1, leaving Mitch to chase down Emil Kramer, but picked up later as the track became less heavy. James was his usual self until a bad start in Heat 15 saw him have to come from the back. It looked at first like he was trying the same trick as last week against Ryan Fisher, and ran out of track, but looking at Ian Adam's pics and the clip I took of Heat 15, it seems like he maybe lost control in the middle of the 3rd bend and torpedoed the pit entry fencepost. A broken leg was initially suspected, but we're all relieved to hear that his leg is still in one piece and he should be back with us in a few weeks time. A speedy recovery James!

Finally, new man Robin Tournqvist found himself struggling badly. He should be fine with a few meetings and some track time under him, but he can't afford to take too long in settling down. I wish him all the best at Armadale on Friday night though, it'll be a pig of an away debut.
