Hi there! Friday nights Q&A session at Firhill went off pretty well, though I was only able to hang about for a couple of hours. Chris Harris gave us all plenty insight into his globe-trotting Speedway Superstar lifestyle, as well as letting us all in on the fact that he could, just possibly, have signed for the Tigers in 2004. Instead he hopped up to the Elite League with Coventry and hasn't looked back since.
Robert Nagy came over to Glasgow with his wife and kids and he gave us all a good insight into the life of a young rider in a foreign country, mastering new tracks, taking in the different approaches to racing and handling the pressure of racing in the British Leagues. It would seem none of it fazed him, and he just got on with the job. What it came down to was a case of 'If I don't win or do well, I'll have to go home'. No doubt the same criteria applies to the two young Aussies hopefully winging their way over to Scotland. No time for home-sickness and 'sensitive souls', theres racing to be done...............
There followed some excellent footage of Robert in the 1992 National League Riders Championship. It took three efforts to get the ride-off for the title going and on each occassion Nagy rode hard, no quarter and all that stuff. I never saw the guy ride in the flesh, but I'd lovetosee more footage of him. There then followed a KO Cup tie at Shawfield, the footage taken from the exit of the 2nd bend. Shawfield footage is non-existant on Youtube, so this was something of a treat. It's amazing, just how grand Shawfield looked from that angle, though the view over to the dis-used and shabby terracing might not have been so hot........
The final panel member was Stewart Dickson, who suffered numerous 'Off On Holiday' gags, but was excellent value with some good cracks and his own reminiscences of following the Tigers.
As I said, I shuffled off at about 9pm, but the rest of the evening's proceedings are described here.
While I'm on the subject, can I also just say a big, big thankyou to everyone who has linked to me recently. The latest one is the Unofficial Glasgow Tigers site, which quite frankly is the best online source of Tigers info going. Nobody so much as sneezes at Ashfield without these guys being there to give us all the lowdown. At various points last season, when I didn't have the time, I shamelessly delegated my responsibilities with regard to providing even a semblance of a meeting report, and simply stuck in a link to the Glasgow Speedway site. Just like I did above. What I'm saying is that nobody does meeting reports like they do, certainly not me.
Ach! I'll make this place an honest enterprise yet...........
